Adult Volunteers Needed for Sept. 12-14 Challenge Days

KEY WEST (268 words) – For the past six years Monroe County students have been a part of an intense one-day workshop called Challenge Day. This year brings a new challenge in recruiting volunteers because of a law enacted last year known as the Jessica Lunsford Act. Now more than ever, Challenge Day organizers need volunteers to register early in order to comply with the new state law.

“The fun thing about Challenge Day for volunteers is being there watching these great kids go through this meaningful experience. This day just doesn’t work without adults participating,” said Sunny Booker, Monroe County School District Safe School Coordinator.

Challenge Day incorporates circle time activities similar to this one used at the Coral Shores High School Field Day earlier this year.

Challenge Day is a one-day workshop for high school age youth, teachers, administrators and community members that successfully addresses the issues of violence, racism, teasing, stereotypes, tobacco, alcohol and drug abuse within the context of teen life.  Challenge Days are scheduled at Coral Shores High School Tuesday and Wednesday, September 12 and 13. Marathon High School Challenge Day is set for Wednesday, September 13 and Key West Challenge Day is planned for Thursday, September 14.
