MYCP’s Puppets of Prevention Fire Safety Performance Available to Public

ISLAMORADA, Fla. (288 words) – Who would have thought a popular song recorded by Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Johnny Horton, Fats Domino, and Huey Lewis and the News would inspire a puppet team to teach fire safety? That’s just what happened last week when the Monroe Youth Challenge Program’s (MYCP) Puppets of Prevention (POP) did a parody of “Shake, Rattle, and Roll” to teach “Stop, Drop, and Roll.” MYCP’s POP seven-member team joined efforts with the Islamorada Fire Department at Montessori Island Charter School (MICS) to teach fire safety to 40 students. The puppet program is available free by request to any public school, pre-school center, children’s group or organization.

MYCP Puppets of Prevention Team Members Dannon Magrane, Leah Sutter, and Rachel Timmerman perform the parody “Stop, Drop, and Roll” after Islamorada Fire Department’s Steve Pollock and Geo Toth taught fire safety at Montessori Island Charter School last week. Fire Safety puppet performances are available free of charge upon request.

MICS Teacher Sandy Spence said, “It was such an energetic way to teach the kids about stop, drop, and roll! We loved it!!” The POP Team used dance and puppetry to get the message across. MYCP District Prevention Coordinator Michele Sutter said, “The kids were enthralled with the performance and Fireman Steve had them literally rolling around on the floor, practicing the safety step.”

Islamorada Fire Department personnel Geo Toth and Steve Pollock gave students lessons in fire safety. After the puppet song and dance performance students climbed onto the fire engines and received goodie bags with fire station souvenirs and activity books.

POP Team members, who are all home educated with the ability to perform during school hours without missing their own studies are: Freshmen Jonathan Bogue and Dannon Magrane, Sixth-Grader Kirean Magrane, Eighth-Grader TJ Magrane, Seventh-Grader Rachel Timmerman, Freshman Leah Sutter, and Sophomore Sofia Wronka.

MYCP is a project of the Monroe County Education Foundation to foster acceptance, respect, and success in the youth of Monroe County. For more information contact Michele Sutter at (305) 852-1664 or visit www.monroe.k12.fl.us/mycp.
