Youth Support Local Food Pantry, Host ‘Soup A Bowl’ March 6

ISLAMORADA (290 words) -- The newly formed Monroe Youth Challenge Program PeaceJam Youth Board take the issue of hunger and poverty serious. They invite the community to the “Soup-A-Bowl” Dinner Fest Saturday, March 6 at 6 p.m. at the Island Christian School Family Life Center, MM 83.5 bayside, Islamorada.

The event is modeled after “Empty Bowls” project, a national service learning movement and is in response to PeaceJam’s global call to action. The intent is to raise awareness about hunger and homelessness as well as make a difference. “We are following the commitment we made to each other and our community to think globally and act locally,” said Jessica Lankford, board member and ICS student.

Coral Shores High School Senior Luana Peixoto of Key Largo and Homeschool Student Leah Sutter of Tavernier prepare hand-made bowls to sell at the March 6 “Soup A Bowl” event to support the local food pantry.

Upper Keys Peace Jammers are students from Coral Shores High School, ICS and home education. Together they have planned to host this dinner much like a “soup kitchen” that serves soup, salad, bread and water or tea. The cost per meal is $5. Tickets can be purchased the evening of the event.

Dinner is to be served in bowls and plates made or painted by students from Coral Shores, Treasure Village Montessori, Island Christian and home educated. The dinnerware is to be for sale at the event to help raise additional funds.

Proceeds are designated to the local food pantry and soup kitchen operated by the First Baptist Church of Islamorada. In 2009, they served 3,322 dinners and out food pantry helped 2,044 people.

The PeaceJam Youth Board is sponsored by MYCP.
