Key West Students Host ‘Soup-A-Bowl’ May 26

KEY WEST, Fla. (278 words) -- With 287 bowls made by art students at Key West High School, peers who volunteer with Monroe Youth Challenge Program are prepared to host “Soup-A-Bowl” Wednesday, May 26. The fundraiser is set for 5:30 to 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Church, located at 700 Truman Avenue, Key West. Money collected is to support St. Mary’s food pantry and relief efforts in Haiti.

Key West High School Sophomore Lauren Miller, who also serves on the county-wide PeaceJam Youth Board, modeled the event after a national program and a successful event her peers held in the Upper Keys a couple months ago. Miller adds, “We really want to do something significant before the school year ends to relieve the suffering of homeless people.”

Soup-A-Bowl is modeled after “Empty Bowls,” a national service learning movement and is in response to PeaceJam’s global call to action. A dozen students have voluntarily worked through the 10-subject curriculum together after school and on weekends all year. This is a culmination of their Nobel Peace Laureate studies and a desire to take action for peace.

For a minimum $10 donation, guests choose a hand-made bowl to be filled with soup and served with a salad. Miller adds, “Please come have dinner at the Soup-A-Bowl to support people less fortunate than we are. You have to eat somewhere. Why not make it a meal with meaning?”

Monroe Youth Challenge Program is a project of the Monroe County Education Foundation to build Developmental Assets® and create opportunities so every child in Monroe County can feel safe, loved, and celebrated.
