Key West High School Construction Students Travel to Orlando

KEY WEST (210 words) – State Farm, Habitat for Humanity, Florida Learn and Serve, Monroe Youth Challenge Program, and Key West High School team up to change the lives of 18 students in a service learning project. This project is part of a newly-created program at Key West High School. It provides training for youth in the construction trade and helps Key West residents make home improvements through Habitat for Humanity. This program is designed to simultaneously improve the students’ academic achievements.

The mission is to help these select students leave high school with an employable skill as well as the character to be productive and engaged citizens in their community. Four of the top-performing students were given the opportunity to gain a broader perspective of service learning by attending the 18th Annual Service Learning Conference in Orlando.

While there, juniors and sophomores Roger Matamoros, Jonathan Cruz, Zachary Martin, and Alberto Lopez met with State Farm representatives who were enthused to hear details about their project. State Farm is the largest corporate donor in Florida for service learning.

Monroe Youth Challenge Program is a project of the Monroe County Education Foundation to build Developmental Assets® and create opportunities so every child in Monroe County can feel safe, loved, and celebrated.
