MYCP Partners with Florida National Guard to Teach Leadership to Monroe County Students

With walkie talkies, ropes, balls, and clip boards two Florida National Guard Staff Sergeants toured the Florida Keys last week in a partnership with Monroe Youth Challenge Program to teach leadership and communication to youth in Monroe County.

As part of their drug and violence prevention education available to schools across the state, National Guard Staff Sgt. Angela Thomas and Staff Sgt. Gregory Johnston taught a ropes course on Saturday and then a communications game on Sunday of Labor Day Weekend at the Make Your Mark Retreat on Pigeon Key to more than 60 students and adult volunteers.

Coral Shores Seniors Robert Turbessi and Kaitlin O’Connor of Tavernier and Key Largo respectively, receive instruction from Sgt. Thomas during a recent leadership training hosted by MYCP.

The following week they used similar techniques at Island Christian School, Key West High School, Coral Shores High School, Plantation Key School, and Marathon High School. John Beeler, who teaches economics, history and government at Island Christian said, “We enjoyed spending time with Sergeants Johnson and Thomas. Thank you [MYCP] for the opportunity.”

Sgt. Thomas had just returned from 14 months in Iraq and Sgt. Johnston had recently served in Afghanistan.
