The Technology:

SOS Team members have been working on map skills using Global Positioning System devices. These students learned to use the GPS and used this information to mark locations at the school and at Plantation Hammock Preserve.

GPS is a cutting edge technology that is being used for disaster response, relief, and recovery as well as an essential use of technology for homeland security. It is finding its way into everyday use. The devices were requested to give the students an edge in the real world as they use this technology to learn necessary life skills.

This technology can also be used for fun. The students recently visited Crane Point Hammock in Marathon to use their skills for “geocaching”, a kind of treasure hunt that uses the technology to find buried treasure. Students were given a map of the Crane Point Hammock grounds, where the museum staff had placed hidden treasures for them to locate by following GPS coordinates.
