Youth Create Global Calls to Action at PeaceJam SLAM
 Monday,
Sept 21 almost 300 high school students from across
the county gathered to discover what peace is and
what they can do to create peace. This project is in
response to the global call to action challenge from
Nobel Peace Laureates and PeaceJam.
MYCP promotes PeaceJam teams throughout the county
to help reduce violence and bullying. Thank you to
all of our adult volunteers who made the
International Day of Peace event possible! For full

Save kids from the 'Toxic Culture'
|
|
 |
 |
Parent to Parent
Groups Open Now
Behaviors
don't lie. If you knew what expert Bill Oliver shares about the
toxic culture of drugs, underage drinking, early sexual activity
and the internet you would know when to intervene in a child's
life. To help families and school staff come together to be part
of the solution to protect youth, MYCP offers this course for
free. Six short videos inspire participant discussion so adults
can see children and children's peers in a light of truth.
Together caregivers gain effective tools of communication and
boundary setting. To connect with a Parent-to-Parent group in
your area, contact Michele Sutter at (305) 852-1664 or
jade21@bellsouth.net. Day, evening, and weekend groups
available. Because underage drinking is known to start in the
third grade, parents of youth of all ages are encouraged to
enroll in this free course. |

Spotlight on: Pawee Sae-Chau
A
sophomore at Johnson & Wales University in North Miami, Pawee
Sae-Chua continues to be a successful scholar while she serves
her community. Pawee (far right) graduated from Marathon High
School in 2008 and is on track to finish her Hospitality
Management degree in 2012.
"I love being with the girls," she says of her sorority, Alpha
Sigma Tau. "We volunteer with the breast cancer walk, Habitat
for Humanity, and the autism Olympics."
Between class and volunteer days, Pawee works the front desk
at the Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club in Aventura.
She plans to start their management training program soon.
After graduation she hopes to advance with Fairmont into
their leadership development program so she can manage her
own hotel one day. A side dream she has, "10 or 15 years
down the road, is to open my own small, organic restaurant
for fun," she says.
Pawee believes MYCP changed her by giving her leadership
skills. "I looked at things differently. I wasn't so close
minded or selfish. I became more open, accepting and
helpful."
To our sponsors she says, "You are supporting the future of
these students. You're basically giving them a better life."
She appreciates that MYCP works with students from families
"who don't have much because we were able to role model for
them and give them a better future."
For students entering high school, Pawee says, "I would
encourage someone to go to Challenge Day because it helps
bring out who you are. It was amazing. It helped me find who
I was."
Through her four-year high school career Pawee participated
in several Challenge Days, attended Next Step in Marathon
and served on the Seasons of Service team. Challenge Day
taught her she is not alone in this world. "There was
someone next to me who could really help me. I got to pull
myself out of a hole and be happy."
Now she's the person other people sit next to and get help
from.

See Conflict as an Opportunity
|
| |
 |
A Peacemaking Tip from supporters, Keys To Peace
Conflict is inevitable. To make life peaceful, accept
the conflict as a lesson. It is a gift to you. For
example, think of a current or recent conflict
situation. Ask yourself, "What lesson is in this
situation for me? What character trait does this
strengthen? What can I learn to let go of? What new
skill or attitude can I develop? How can I use this to
grow?" Louise Diamond, author of The Peace Book, writes
"The greater the threat, the greater the lesson."
